
Louisiana
State University, the states comprehensive research university,
is the home of
more than 30,000 students and more than 1,400 faculty, many of whom are international
authorities of distinction in their fields. Accredited by the Commission on Colleges of
the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelors, masters,
doctoral, and professional degrees, LSU is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a
Research University I and is both a land grant and sea-grant institution. LSUs
instructional programs include 201 undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees,
placing it in the top 2% of the nations colleges and universities.
The Baton Rouge campus is a large walking
area of 2,000 square acres in the southern part of the city with over 250 principle
buildings and facilities. LSU is home to the world famous Tiger football, baseball, and
basketball teams.
The LSU Union is
the focus of student life and includes a post office, bookstore, shops,
a food court,
student organization offices, a movie theater, barbershop, game areas, art gallery, and
Union Theater for concerts and other musical and theatrical productions.
